1st Night of Hanukkah: Public Safety

לֹ֥א תַעֲמֹ֖ד עַל־דַּ֣ם רֵעֶ֑ךָ
Do Not Stand Idly By The Blood of Your Neighbor (Lev. 19:16)
Kavanah: To foster safe and vibrant communities, prioritizing the well-being of all, and equal opportunity for all. Our obligation is not only to help guardrail the means by which people can hurt one another, but to proactively invest in community measures that support human thriving.
As we celebrate Hanukkah, we are reminded of a core tenet of Jewish law: the preservation of human life and dignity takes precedence over all else. Our teachings compel us to act in ways that protect and uplift those arosund us, especially those most vulnerable. The mitzvah of pikuach nefesh (saving a life) calls us to extend a hand to those in need, ensuring their safety, well-being, and opportunity to thrive.

You shall love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. (Deut. 10:19)

גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים — בֵּין בְּגוּפוֹ, בֵּין בְּמָמוֹנוֹ.
Acts of loving kindness are greater than charity because they can be done either with one’s actions, or one’s money. (Tractate Sukkah, 49b)
Kavanah: To engage in compassionate actions that provide immediate support and care. Our obligation is to tangibly provide sustenance to as many of those less fortunate than us. Internally and externally, we work with our hands and hearts to offer whatever we can.
